Robots and Stars

For a few years I've toyed with the idea of blogging. I never followed through because blogging is kind of like an online diary and I was never a good diary writer. I always felt the desire to write down my thoughts, but never had the day to day follow through. I've known people who could faithfully fill pages upon pages and pour their hearts out in a super secret book, but I could never find the patience and fortitude to do the same. Blogging sounded fun, but I had no passion urging me to do it.

That is, until now.

My worship leader was talking to our team about unity and he had a cool way of picturing it. He described how we are like Power Rangers who "morph" into one mega robot and tied that thought to 1 Corinthians 12:12. That's the verse that says we are all part of one body - the "body" being the church of God. We all play different parts and have different roles, yet no one person is more important than the other. Likewise, no one can say that they are unnecessary just because they don't play a "favored" role. We all are important and at the same time need each other! My worship leader encouraged us to accept the different ways that God ministers to us. He pleaded with us to not fall into the trap of believing that we've got nothing important to offer. The "weird" or unique way that God talks to us could touch someone in a fresh way.

At our Christmas Eve service, Pastor had an interesting message about the stars. He reminded me of how the stars are used as signs pointing to Jesus and how we can still use them today to see how BIG God is. Pastor then asked, "Who are the bright shining lights that led you to find Jesus?" When he asked that, I honestly could not think of one person. I'm sure my mother would cringe hearing this because she probably believes she is that star. I'd guess that it is hard for many people who grew up in Christian families to point out who exactly led them to Christ. For me it was more about a culmination of experiences. As I thought on that, Pastor went on to say, "If you can't think of who that shining star is in your life, be that star to someone else."

That right there resonated with me.

It seemed my worship leader and Pastor were both encouraging me to believe that the thoughts bouncing around in my head are both unique and purposeful. It encouraged and reinforced my decision to start blogging.

Now why am I blogging about my reflections and devotions? Recently I've started getting up super early in the morning to read my Bible and I've been bringing my notebook to church to take sermon notes. Pretty soon afterwards, my notes and devotions started to harmonize and beautifully encouraging words were running though my head. This led to the thought that, "I need to write this down and share it." I found the passion right then to create a blog.

So far blogging is giving me the extra zeal to get up in the morning to read my Bible and keep my heart open to catch a new word from God. I am hoping that this blog, my words, also touch people in a fresh way. I hope it encourages you to embrace and share your unique talent and wisdom with others too. As one giant robot we can shine like a star and point to the One that holds us all together.

Merry Christmas.⭐

The Expanse

I participated in a Zoom prayer call tonight with other women at my church and at the end I just had that feeling of loveliness. It felt good, it felt connected, and it made me want to connect with God even more. I opened my Bible and read Jeremiah 2:2 .  Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord, “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.” My thoughts after reading this was: Lord increase my wonder of You.  When things are brand new we have a strong urge to learn more, seek more, engage more. When the shine wears off, we become complacent and less interested. Maybe it’s because we feel we’ve learned all we need to know. Maybe it’s because we are too comfortable in the now. Maybe it’s because we can’t see the possibility of there being so much more for us to gain.  When it comes to my spirit and You, God, please open my eyes to see the expanse of all that you have for me to...

Practice Makes Righteous

There were two things that stood out to me in Proverbs 11 . I learned about using discretion and about generosity. Solomon's words show that those who practice these two things are wise. Practice being gracious: Verse 12 : He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace. Verse 13 : A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter. Practice giving lavishly: Verse 24 : There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. Verse 25 : The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself. Verse 26 : He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it. Last Sunday, my Pastor's teaching was on the Godly principle of giving and tithing. He pointed out that the expectation for us to give is a test tied to a promise. He t...

Comfort in Discomfort

Our small group chatted recently about a comment our pastor mentioned a few Sundays ago. The comment left some of us scratching our heads and trying to understand how we really  felt about it. Our pastor said that he's noticed a common thread stated by people who experience hardships. They all said they would not change their bad experiences because they now value the good lessons they learned following their trials. The common sentiment was that the pain and hard lessons were worth it in order to grow. I intellectually understood this point, but my physical and emotional, pain-understanding being, disagreed! Do I want to experience hurt and discomfort just to learn how to lean into God and understand that He is my shelter and Comforter? The answer is no , not really. I'd rather just know it. Unfortunately, that's not the way it works. We live with our human nature, ripe with opportunities for exercising freewill. This freewill can positively and negatively impact our live...
