Our Strength & Song

Earlier in the week my son woke up very early in the morning from a bad dream. He was so scared that he clung to us. Since he was up just before the time I would have got up for my devotions, I decided to let him join me. He was still in his "let's be quiet and just cuddle" mode, so I figured I could read my Bible and hold him at the same time without incident. It turned out that Psalm 118 was a good chapter to read out loud with him. Together, we learned that God helps us when we are in trouble, God is our strength and song, and we praise God because he treats us with mercy.

Even though he's only two, my son listened to some of the words I read. We did some active listening and I had him repeat a few verses after me. Here are a few verses I asked him to repeat:
  • v. 6: The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?
  • v. 14: The Lord is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.
The rest of the chapter has good truths to hold on to in times of distress. Verses 15 and 16 describe the victorious nature of the "right hand" of the Lord. The whole chapter encourages us to remember that we are the Lord's and in him we "shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord." (v. 17)

God has always helped me when I was distressed and heartbroken and scared. He has always been my source of strength when I had none of my own and didn't feel like having a good attitude and putting a smile on my face. He has given me reasons to sing and be joyful because even in hard times, he has provided peace.

Because of the frigid cold weather I got to spend the whole day with my son. Every once in a while he would recall something that scared him in his dream. When that happened I reminded him of Psalm 118:14 and had him say God is his strength and song. That got him to smile and he moved on to his next activity. It was such a joy to see him embracing the truth of God's word and thinking- yeah, I don't have to worry about this fear anymore. It's a truth that I am going to keep on embracing too. God bless us all with a free spirit that accepts your truth as true and trades in our fears and weaknesses for the joy and peace that God offers instead.

Insignificance: Parable of the Lost Son

Hello! Women's Prayer Call Series: Parable of the Lost Son Today I want to share my thoughts on the parable of the lost son which is found in Luke 15 verses 11 through 32. When I read through this parable last week, I felt led to talk about the struggle of feeling mentally lost and insignificant because of where you are right now - whatever those circumstances may be. I want you to look at this story and see how Jesus is telling us that God cares a lot about the wellbeing of each and every one of us. I want to encourage you to see how valuable you are to God right where you are. So you know where I’m going with this. Here’s a quick summary of the parable, and I think it’s a good idea to read it in the context of all of chapter 15. Jesus starts with a story of a man losing one of his sheep; he describes how the man leaves the other 99 sheep to go after the 1 that was lost. When the man finds the lost sheep, he puts the sheep on his shoulders, brings it home, and gathers his friends ...

Belly Check

I enjoyed reading Proverbs 20 . In Solomon's style of pointing out observations, he reminds us we need God's counsel to be the compass for our soul. I want to highlight my observations of his message to us. Our Compass : Proverbs 20:9-13 Solomon implores us to assess our actions through the lens of what's right in God's eyes. God is our guide and measurement for what is good and evil. Solomon's warning about sleep points to a spiritual slumber caused by not growing in our faith in God. This leads to an impoverished soul. Solomon says to "open thine eyes." We need to be alert and be aware of our spiritual state of being. We need to cultivate our spirit with God's word and direction. Solomon points out that when our eyes are open, we "shalt be satisfied with bread," meaning our soul will be filled. Our Counsel : Proverbs 20:5, 20:18, 20:24 I pondered over these verses for some time because I had a feeling there was something good that ne...

A Hope for Something New

It's been a while since I last posted. Though I missed blogging and felt an internal pressure to write, I decided to not give in to my inner critic and took a break. I was still reading my Bible and finished reading Proverbs, however, my joy in getting up early in the morning waned. I am going to experiment with some other times in the day to see what will work for me now. Over the past year I have learned and accepted that I'm not a creature of habit. I love to hop around and multitask and dive into different projects. With this in mind, it kind of makes sense that my attempt at keeping to a regular schedule of getting up at 5 am would not last forever. 😂 Because of my struggle with this, my practice of writing down my thoughts and doing a deep dive to understand what I was reading slowly stopped. I missed the deep dive and I hope with recreating my schedule, I can do some more writing and then some more blogging. Anyone else have this same struggle with trying to stick to a ...
